Let’s face it . . . Government contracting is fraught with rules and regulations that can be time consuming, frustrating, and often requires a level of understanding before you get your foot in the door. On the other hand, the Federal government is the largest purchaser of goods and services, and the rewards, once you overcome these hurdles, are significant. The Federal government awards multi-billion contracts annually. Recent privatization of traditionally government functions has directed billions of dollars in annual contracts to qualified businesses.
The federal government is constantly looking for dynamic companies able to fulfill their need and to provide innovative solutions that are cost-effective while increasing productivity and capacity. The DOD/IC/DHS market is likewise looking for qualified businesses because they understand that within this community innovations arise from unrestrictive creativity that is often hampered or lost in large companies. The DOD/IC/DHS market also complies with the Small Business Administration's goals to support small and small and disadvantaged businesses to fuel economic growth and ensure opportunities exist equally within the Federal Government procurement system.
While the DOD/IC/DHS struggle to fulfill their varying goals, small companies who are able to provide the necessary products and services often lack the marketing skills and administrative function necessary to penetrate the government’s procurement processes and be fully compliant with their acquisition regulations. For companies who have not previously done business with the federal government, the entrance lead-time typically extends a minimum of 18 months to the anticipated sales target. The market penetration lead-time is often extended further when entering the DOD environment due to complicated security requirements necessary to operate in that venue ~ all equating to time, effort and money expended with no revenue generated.
